Do Goals Really Work?
Many people set goals only to feel disappointed with the results. Do goals truly work, or is there a better approach?
Rethinking Goal Setting
This morning, I chatted with a friend about her financial goals. As she talked, I asked her how these goals made her feel.
After a pause, I offered my perspective: I don’t set goals for myself because I find them limiting and frustrating. By the end of our conversation, she was moved and grateful. I had introduced her to a new way to approach her business, clients, and life?"one that felt scary yet inspiring in a way traditional goal-setting couldn’t match.
Could this approach be right for you too? Here’s what I shared with her.
Goals: Confining Boxes
Remember playing in big boxes as a child? As an adult, squeezing your life into one isn’t so fun. That’s what goals can do.
Time and again, I’ve seen goals create limitations and anxiety. Once you set a goal, it dominates your thoughts. Everything revolves around achieving it. My friend began seeing potential clients as mere dollar signs?"not a comfortable view for anyone.
The questions start: “How will I meet my goal? What if I fail? What will people think?” And then there’s the inevitable moment of doubt when a goal feels out of reach: “Oh, I didn’t really mean it.”
Reaching the goal often leads to a pause: “I did it. Time to relax.” But what if you kept moving forward? You’ll never know.
Embrace Being
I asked my friend, “Who would you be without focusing on financial goals?”
This question sparked something in her. She realized she’d never considered who she could be, only what she would do.
Starting with the intention to be something special?"or more authentically yourself?"can lead to greater achievements and experiences than any goal. While goals can box you in, intentions set you free.
Intention should push you out of your comfort zone and make you feel alive. Set one with commitment, even if it scares you.
I know someone who was always giving but felt uncomfortable receiving. She set the intention to embrace receiving alongside giving. It was challenging but immensely rewarding. She received friendship, joy, peace, and love?"gifts that transformed her life.
All she did was set an intention and align her actions with it.
What Will You Be?
Why not set an intention today and see where it takes you? Embrace a journey of becoming rather than achieving.
