Adult ADHD: Are You an Idea Machine?
Summary
People with Adult ADHD often generate more creative ideas in a day than others do in a week. However, these ideas can become distractions, pulling focus away from main goals. Discover how to harness your creativity without losing sight of what matters.
Article
If you have Adult ADHD, you're likely an "idea machine," constantly buzzing with new concepts and creative thoughts. But often, these ideas aren't in line with what you're currently focusing on, turning them into distractions from your primary objectives. So, what can someone with Adult ADHD do about this overflow of creativity?
I struggle with this myself, as I frequently generate at least ten "million-dollar ideas" daily. Implementing even one of these ideas can be a challenge. I love the process of brainstorming and wouldn't want to stop it. It's a strength of mine.
The key is to take each new idea and see how its essence can be woven into what I'm already working on. This approach is something everyone with Adult ADHD needs to cultivate.
How It Works
Consider this scenario: I’m working on a website about Attention-Deficit Disorder, and suddenly, I get a brilliant idea for opening a restaurant in my town. Despite its potential, I don't truly want to dive into the restaurant business, knowing its monotonous nature could bore me, which is particularly detrimental for someone with ADHD. But the idea still has merit.
So, I ask myself: "What's excellent about this restaurant idea, and how can its core concept benefit my ADHD website?"
ADHD often leads to an all-or-nothing mindset: "Should I pursue this idea or not?" Instead, frame it as: "How can I integrate this exciting idea into my current project?"
Train yourself to think this way. Even during discussions with friends or collaborators, when a random idea pops up, you can ask, "How can we apply this to our current venture? What excites me about it?"
For example, thinking about opening a Mexican restaurant because the town lacks one may transform into, "What do people with Adult ADHD need but aren't getting?" Identifying that need could set you on a successful path.
Maximize Your ADHD
By reshaping your ideas to align with your overarching goals, you’ll outpace others. While they might have a handful of ideas, you have a steady flow of creative solutions.
Imagine the progress you'd make if you channeled these ideas into your main project daily, becoming a powerhouse of productivity.
