Well-Loved: Letting Go of What You Don’t Want

Summary:

Sometimes, the advice to accept yourself can feel overused and unhelpful, especially when you're feeling stuck and dissatisfied. However, embracing and forgiving your current situation is an essential first step towards change. Here's how you can do it:

Appreciating the Old

I've come to appreciate used items. I've scored a great gas barbecue from Freecycle, a nearly new John Deere mower for $50, a beautiful Le Creuset shelf from a friend's basement, and a lovely leather purse from a thrift shop. These treasures feel like blessings?"not only for the joy they bring but also the thrill of acquiring them at little to no cost.

I'm typing on a used computer on a desk from a yard sale, sitting in a chair I inherited, sipping from a water bottle I've refilled many times. While brand-new items have their allure, disposing of perfectly good things bothers me. I wish it were easier to find homes for unwanted items during the purging frenzy. Sometimes, energy is spent cleaning out the junk room, leaving none for sorting donations from trash.

The Desire for Change

Like many, my clients and I often yearn to discard the unwanted?"whether it's a job, a body, a relationship, or a lifestyle. We crave transformation and want it immediately. The desire for something different blinds us to what we already possess.

As a coach, I offer guidance but no magical seven-step process for change. I believe you’re fantastic as you are, and meaningful transformation begins with acceptance.

Embrace the Present

Self-acceptance may sound clichéd, but it's vital, even when feeling stuck. The first step is to love and forgive what is. Here’s how you can start:

1. Describe Your Current Reality

Examine what's truly happening in your life. Identify what's working, what's not, and what you want to preserve for the future. Consider assumptions you might have made, and whose values you are prioritizing. Recognize immediate and long-term challenges.

2. Consider How It Serves You

Suspend disbelief and pretend the unwanted aspect serves a purpose. Maybe a challenging boss is motivating you to leave a stagnant job, or a health scare is a wake-up call. Reframe your circumstances positively, turning obstacles into opportunities.

3. Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is powerful yet challenging. Start by acknowledging your emotions (hurt, anger, etc.), then take gradual steps toward genuine acceptance. Here's one way to progress:

- I forgive you for being thoughtless.
- I forgive you for insensitive remarks.
- I forgive you for hurting my feelings.
- I forgive myself for expecting too much.
- I forgive myself for overreacting.
- I forgive myself for not communicating my needs.
- I accept my responsibility in the situation.

Acceptance empowers you to release anger, extra weight, or other burdens. It's not about judging what's good or bad but recognizing that some things may not fit in your life right now. Maybe someone else can use them, which is why consignment stores and eBay exist.

By embracing acceptance and forgiveness, you allow yourself the freedom to let go and move forward.
