The Hot Tub: Finding Your Center
Each morning, I swim at the community pool and, if time permits, indulge in a soothing soak in the hot tub. It’s a spacious tub, fitting four to five people, with pleasantly hot water and an option to turn the bubbles on or off. My favorite moments are when the water is still, and I can sit quietly, embracing the serenity before the day unfolds.
Recently, my peaceful soak was disrupted when two people entered, turned on the bubbles, and launched into a loud, agitated conversation. I found myself thinking, “Why not just enjoy the hot tub?"the soothing heat and the relaxation? They’re missing this extraordinary moment.” Their noisy chatter pulled them?"and me?"away from enjoying the present.
Reflecting on this later, I realized I often do the same. Throughout my day, my mind engages in a constant, sometimes stressful internal dialogue. Familiar phrases echo in my head:
- “Do it this way, not like that.”
- “That was dumb! What were you thinking?”
- “Hurry up, you’ll be late for that meeting.”
- “Why did you say THAT?!”
I've started a new practice to counter this. When I notice these intrusive thoughts, I pause and find my center?"that tranquil, soothing place reminiscent of the hot tub. I remind myself that this calmness is always within reach and suggest that I immerse myself in it.
Don’t wait for the hot tub. Find your center now and embrace it.
