The Fear Of Stuttering

Overcoming the Fear of Stuttering
For much of my life, stuttering was a constant challenge. I began stuttering at the age of four, according to my parents, and it left me feeling frustrated and determined to conquer it. There were certain words I simply couldn’t articulate, and speaking under pressure was a nightmare. After 18 years of struggling, I finally achieved fluency, and it's as though a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.
Stuttering can dominate a person's life, affecting every decision. For instance, I left school because my speech impediment made my time there unbearable. The fear of being asked to read aloud or answer questions left me dreading school every day. I vividly recall an English class role-play where my nerves got the best of me, leaving me feeling utterly defeated.
Home should be a sanctuary, but even there, I faced challenges. The telephone became a source of anxiety. To fluent speakers, this may sound odd, but those who stutter might relate. Often, I'd ignore calls, making up excuses like having stepped out when my parents inquired about missed messages.
My fear of stuttering led me to avoid situations where I might stutter. But determined to beat this impediment, I was ready to try anything. Now, having achieved fluency, life has taken on a new brightness and freedom.
