Have you ever paused to imagine what life is like for someone who stutters?
Navigating the world with a stutter can be challenging, and at times, those who stutter would appreciate a bit more empathy.
Having overcome a stutter myself, I asked some friends for their perceptions of life with a severe stutter. While some responses were enlightening, others were frustrating.
Jim remarked:
"I always thought you exaggerated the impact of your stutter. It’s not like you couldn’t speak at all, right? Sometimes, I felt you just needed more courage, like when you’d ask Tony to order your drinks."
Paul shared his thoughts:
"I found it amusing when you’d speak fluently and then suddenly couldn’t get a word out."
Ashley offered a more understanding perspective:
"I felt sorry watching you struggle; it was hard to see."
Nigel added:
"I'm grateful I don’t stutter, but you weren’t alone in facing challenges. I admire how you've managed to overcome it."
Jim’s comments irked me the most, so I challenged him:
"Think having a stutter isn’t that bad, Jim? I dare you to order a pint of lager while stuttering on a few words. Experience the reactions and maybe understand my journey a bit better."
Despite encouragement from our group, Jim refused the challenge.
Stuttering isn’t easy, and when someone seeks help, offering full support is crucial.
I was fortunate to have friends who stepped in for me at times, and my family supported me with phone calls to doctors or insurers.
However, there were moments in my life when mocking and ridicule left me feeling depressed and withdrawn, wondering why I had to stutter.
