Just Say "I Don't Know"

Summary

From a young age, we're taught to explain our actions, often being asked, "Why did you do that?" It's time to unlearn this habit, as it doesn't always lead to true understanding.

Article Body

Why am I writing this? Honestly, I don't know. I can come up with reasons, but there's no certainty in them. Embracing our ignorance is okay?"and perhaps necessary. Though we're tempted to explain everything, this often hinders genuine understanding. Let me illustrate...

Rationalization 101

Consider John, who was hypnotized and given a post-hypnotic suggestion to put on his coat whenever the doctor touched his nose. After the session, as they chatted, the doctor touched his nose, prompting John to stand and don his coat.

When asked why, John replied, "Oh, I thought we were finished," and removed his coat. The doctor repeated the action, and John once again put on his coat. "It's getting cold in here," he explained.

This isn't unique to hypnosis. Our decisions are influenced by many factors, yet we act as if we're aware of them all. Like John, we feel compelled to explain ourselves and believe those explanations. Rationalization is a strong habit.

Embracing "I Don't Know"

Imagine a child who throws a plate at his sibling. His mother demands an explanation, and he truthfully responds, "I don't know." However, this isn't deemed acceptable. Even psychologists can't analyze a child's actions with certainty in mere seconds, yet a six-year-old is expected to try.

While the child may not understand, he quickly learns to invent explanations. By adulthood, saying "I don't know" becomes rare. This is problematic. How can we uncover true causes if we're content with our own explanations?

Accepting Our Ignorance

It's more beneficial to get comfortable saying, "I don't know." You can follow this with "Maybe it's because of..." but refrain from accepting these explanations too quickly. Sometimes, it's better not to explain at all.

For instance, if you can't understand why you avoid someone, isn't it wiser to leave it open-ended rather than settle on a false reason due to self-justification? Leaving questions unanswered may lead to deeper insight. Quick answers can halt deeper thinking.

Self-explanation can stifle self-understanding. Embrace your ignorance and keep observing yourself. Learn to say, "I don't know."
