Awards and Funding Enhance Orlando Schools

Recognizing Efforts in Substance Abuse Prevention

Five Orlando public schools are being honored for their exceptional efforts in preventing alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. At the Statewide Prevention Conference held at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, these schools will be among only ten statewide recognized on September 20, 2006.

Schools receiving accolades include Lancaster Elementary, Gotha and Southwest Middle Schools, and Boone and Timber Creek High Schools. Their innovative and community-driven programs have successfully guided students in making responsible choices. This recognition highlights their commitment to fostering a safe and healthy environment.

Superintendent Ronald Blocker expressed his pride, stating, "Our goal is to empower our students to make positive choices that will shape their futures. It is gratifying to see our efforts acknowledged beyond our school community."

Florida’s First Lady, Columba Bush, will present specially designed flags to these schools during the conference's opening session. Her attendance underscores the significance of this achievement.

Further recognition will be given at the Florida Department of Education’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools Conference in December. The success of these programs is being studied across Florida.

Generous Book Donations from CFE Federal Credit Union

In addition to these awards, Orlando schools have received a substantial gift from the CFE Federal Credit Union. As part of their "Dollars for Books" initiative, a total of $100,000 is donated annually for book purchases in school media centers.

"This investment in our students' futures is invaluable," said Joseph Melbourne, President and CEO of CFE Federal Credit Union. "Reading enriches knowledge daily, building a foundation for lifelong learning."

During an event at Kaley Elementary School, ten principals received $10,000 checks for their schools. Recipients include Eccleston, Englewood, Kaley, Little River, Pinewood, Rolling Hills, West Oaks Elementary; Lee and Liberty Middle Schools; and Cypress Creek High.

Kaley Elementary's Principal, Sandra Daves, emphasized the impact: "Improving reading skills is key to student success, and we are deeply grateful for this generous donation."

To date, the CFE Federal Credit Union has contributed $400,000 to Orlando schools. The continued success of this program promises more reading opportunities for students in the future.

Through these awards and generous donations, Orlando schools are empowered to enhance educational success and foster communities where students can thrive academically and personally.
