Article Body:
Carnegie Hall in New York City is renowned for featuring some of the world's greatest artists, and in April 2007, it will host the prestigious National Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival.
Sponsored by Field Studies International, this festival allows high school music groups nationwide to compete for a spot through recorded audition tapes. This year, 18 groups have achieved the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall. Esteemed judges include Frank Battisti from the New England Conservatory, Craig Kirchhoff from the University of Minnesota, and H. Robert Reynolds from the University of Southern California. They will provide recorded comments and feedback for each group.
The wind ensemble from Cincinnati's Walnut Hills High School is one of the distinguished groups heading to Carnegie Hall.
While many Ohio schools have reduced their music programs, Walnut Hills High School has maintained its 11 bands. Music teacher Kerry Kruze believes that the arts are essential for student development. The wind ensemble is particularly known for its precision and vibrant sound, highlighting that music education should be accessible to all students.
In addition to the ensemble, Walnut Hills offers a choir, orchestra, band, jazz ensemble, and a unique steel drum program, all on par with their academic offerings.
With 69 musicians, the ensemble is recognized as one of the nation's top bands, frequently competing at high-level events sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association. Despite practicing in a less-than-ideal basement space with a leaky roof, their commitment is unwavering.
The ensemble will perform four challenging pieces at Carnegie Hall, including Leonard Bernstein's complex "Overture to Candide." They have dedicated significant time and effort to perfecting these performances ahead of their trip to New York.
After receiving the Carnegie Hall invitation in October, fundraising for travel and accommodations became a priority. Through selling pizzas, magazines, and more, the ensemble members and their families raised $1,000 per person, with additional support from the band's booster group.
While in New York, the ensemble and their chaperones plan to experience a Broadway show, visit museums, enjoy a jazz performance at Birdland jazz club, and explore the city's iconic sights.
