Neuro Linguistic Programming: Revolution or Bunk?
Is it possible to reprogram the brain to change our behavior?
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) combines Linguistics, Semantics, Hypnosis, and Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology. It's about how we interpret our experiences through our senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory. It deals with how we represent the world to ourselves and others.
Our life's events accumulate and store in our subconscious mind, which categorizes, generalizes, interprets, and filters these inputs. This creates what NLP calls "our map" of the world. Different events and experiences create "states" in our physiology, influencing our behavior and reactions.
Eye movements can reflect how we interpret the world. People experience events differently: some kinesthetically (feelings), others visually or verbally (auditory). For instance, when asked, "How was the party?", a person looking right and down might be recalling how they felt, while an auditory-focused person might turn their eyes left, remembering conversations or music. A visually oriented person might look upwards, recalling visuals like decorations.
Responses to "How was the party?" might include:
- Kinesthetic: "I felt great, had an awesome time."
- Auditory: "The music was loud, but I heard Bill talk about Nancy."
- Visual: "The silver balloons and blue ribbons created a pleasant atmosphere."
Can we alter our interpretation of the world to change our behavior? Absolutely?"with the caveat that it should be done by an experienced, ethical practitioner with the subject's consent. Otherwise, the results could be harmful.
NLP's open-ended philosophy makes it controversial. Criticized by some in the scientific community as unproven or pseudo-scientific, it faces accusations of exaggerated claims and unethical practices. Even its developers have differing views on what NLP truly is.
At a seminar, an engineer asked me if I believed in NLP. I replied that I did, but noted it might not work for everyone. During the seminar, the engineer disagreed with the presenter and stormed out, underscoring my point.
Having studied NLP, volunteered in demonstrations, and applied techniques with positive outcomes for clients, I am a believer. Yes, it is possible to reprogram the brain!
