M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank Armament
Overview
In 1988, the M1A1 Abrams tanks were upgraded with enhanced armor that included depleted uranium mesh on the turret and hull fronts. This significantly improved the tanks' resistance to anti-tank weaponry, though it added considerable weight. The first to receive these upgrades were tanks stationed in Germany, positioned as a frontline defense against the Soviet Union.
Advanced Features
Alongside its robust armor, some M1A1 tanks, particularly those used by the US Marine Corps, feature a Missile Countermeasure Device (MCD). This device can detect and jam laser-guided anti-tank missiles, further improving the tank's defensive capabilities. The MCD is mounted on the turret roof in front of the Loader's hatch, often leading to confusion with the M1A2 variant, which features a Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer (CITV) in a similar location. However, the MCD is box-shaped and fixed, unlike the rotating, cylindrical CITV.
Armament Details
The original M1 model was equipped with a M68A1 105 mm rifled gun, capable of firing HEAT, high-explosive, smoke, and anti-personnel flechette rounds. While reliable, this gun became outdated due to advances in armor technology, necessitating an upgrade.
The M1A1 and M1A2 models adopted the M256 120 mm smoothbore gun, designed by Rheinmetall AG in Germany. This gun is a variant of the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44, produced under license by General Dynamics Land Systems in Lima, Ohio. This same armament was used by the German Leopard 2 tank up to the A5 version, which was later upgraded to the L/55 gun in the A6 version.
These advancements have kept the M1 Abrams highly effective and relevant on the modern battlefield, maintaining its status as a formidable force in armored warfare.
