Andrew James Hymel, owner and music director of the Andy Hymel School of Music in Gretna, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans, has transformed a personal dream into a flourishing institution. Hymel’s journey began with a degree in Jazz Performance from Loyola University in New Orleans. His passion for music blossomed early, inspired by jamming sessions in the Algiers area with musicians like Frank Saucier. In the 1980s, he further honed his skills at the World’s Fair with the vocal group Celebration.
While music was Hymel’s personal passion, his business acumen was inspired by his father, Lloyd Hymel, a prominent community figure involved in various civic organizations. Expanding from Home-Based Lessons
Originally teaching from home, Hymel’s venture quickly expanded. He first established the school at 601 Terry Parkway in Gretna, Louisiana, and soon moved to a larger location on Stumpf Boulevard to accommodate 280 students. Opting for a diverse curriculum, he included piano, bass, and drums, with instructors like Jumpin Joe Gelini from Berklee College of Music.

Hymel is committed to igniting musical passion across all ages. From Pre-K music programs to courses for Baby Boomers, the school caters to a wide range of students. Remarkably, five students have earned full scholarships to music schools, and every applicant to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) from his school was accepted on the first try.
Former students have embarked on impressive careers, including performing with the Metropolitan Opera Association and writing as published singer-songwriters.
Musical Achievements and Future Aspirations
As a composer, Hymel has written and recorded hundreds of songs. His work is gaining recognition, with opportunities like Clarence “Frogman” Henry Jr. considering Hymel's songs for an upcoming release.
