Explorer Middle School recently earned the Mayor's School of Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts Education, highlighting its unique integration of arts into academic learning. Principal Marianne Bursi emphasizes the importance of art in enhancing all areas of study.
"We find students learn more by doing," Bursi explained. "The brain retains more through visuals rather than text alone. Our students discover hidden talents as art becomes an integral part of their academics."
Students are encouraged to explore chorus, visual arts, world languages, and applied technology each quarter, with eighth graders selecting their preferred subjects for the year.
International Baccalaureate Opportunities
Phoenix schools are expanding opportunities in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students in grades K-10. This globally recognized teaching model cultivates critical thinking, multilingual proficiency, and cultural awareness.
Mesa Public Schools may soon become the first district in Phoenix to offer an IB program from kindergarten through high school, joining a select few nationwide. Gregg Good, the IB coordinator at one Phoenix high school, is involved in establishing a culturally neutral testing method for selecting participants for the upcoming school year.
