Do Children Need Toys Just for Fun?
As a parent, I’ve stocked up on all the educational toys. The kind you drive miles to find or order from a niche website. These toys promise to boost development, from mini computers for spelling and math to crystal-growing kits and memory games.
While I’m grateful for their benefits, I often wonder if kids need toys purely for fun. Seeing the educational toys scattered around while my kids, Katie and Mitch, play with Silly Putty makes me think back to my own childhood. We had simple toys like little red wagons, building blocks, and our imaginations. One summer, a stick-turned-fishing pole was all I needed for endless fun.
I’d prefer my kids play with toys they truly enjoy. Toys that spark their imagination, make them run around, and explore the world. It’s more satisfying than watching them spend a few hours with an “educational” toy they’ll quickly abandon.
It’s not hard to notice today’s concerns about childhood obesity and inactivity. Many kids, even from good homes, aren’t as active as they should be. They spend time with educational games, yet end up sitting around.
We need to rethink the idea that a toy must be educational to be worthwhile. Consider if it encourages movement and play, or if it just turns kids into couch potatoes. Think about whether the toy will be enjoyed or left untouched.
Let’s let kids be kids and have fun the old-fashioned way. Encourage play that gets them moving, exploring, and using their imaginations.
In short, while educational toys have their place, let’s also make room for toys that are simply about having fun.
