Managing a Child's Diabetes at School
As the school year ends, parents of children with diabetes should take time to evaluate their child’s experience at school. Did the staff manage any issues well? Effective communication between parents and the school is crucial, says Virginia Zamudio, R.N., M.S.N., C.D.E., and past president of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
Regular assessment and establishing strong diabetes management at school can lead to:
- Promoting a healthy, productive learning environment
- Reducing absences and classroom disruptions
- Ensuring effective responses to diabetes-related emergencies
Younger children need closer monitoring, with frequent check-ins at school. Managing a kindergartner's new diagnosis is different from that of a high school senior with years of experience.
Regardless of age, maintain regular discussions with your child about their school experience. This helps them recognize signs of trouble and encourages them to ask for help when needed. Ensure school staff have enough information to care for your child properly.
Provide the school with an action plan from your child’s doctor, outlining instructions on testing, medication, snacks, and managing blood sugar levels. If a nurse isn’t available, even the bus driver should recognize hypoglycemia symptoms and provide quick-acting sugar when necessary.
Create a diabetes-friendly environment. The American Diabetes Association’s Safe at School campaign advises allowing capable students to self-manage their diabetes during class and activities. For more information, visit diabetes.org/advocacy-and-legalresources/discrimination/school/safeschool.jsp.
Open communication between you, your child, and the school staff is essential. With a clear diabetes management plan in place, you and your child can feel secure knowing they will receive the necessary care when needed.
