Area Businesses and Organizations Host Shadowing Day for Philadelphia Students
Summary
I've worked since I turned 16, experiencing both private and nonprofit sectors, and from large corporations to small firms. I vividly remember the thrill and culture shock of my first job. This experience led me to encourage my children to start part-time jobs at 16, not for the money, but for the invaluable workplace exposure.

Entering the workforce after school can be a significant culture shock for young people. Whether they graduate from one of Philadelphia’s schools or pursue college, those who have worked part-time during their adolescence gain invaluable experience. They learn employer expectations and navigate workplace dynamics, giving them an edge over peers who haven't had this exposure.
To bridge this gap, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania collaborated with 165 businesses and organizations in January to host a Shadowing Day for ninth graders from Philadelphia schools. Over 1,552 students participated, spending a workday with a mentor to gain firsthand experience of the real-world workplace.
Each student was paired with an employee from a host organization, observing their daily tasks, workplace interactions, and how they handle responsibilities. This experience significantly reduces future culture shock as these students enter the workforce.
Since 1990, the United Way has campaigned to provide mentors for teens in Philadelphia schools. With over 100,000 students facing challenges like teen pregnancy, violence, and poverty, having a positive adult role model is more crucial than ever. The United Way currently mentors nearly 5,000 youth annually and trains hundreds of new mentors each year.
Studies show that youth with positive adult role models are more likely to:
- View their education positively and attend school regularly.
- Exhibit fewer behavioral problems.
- Aspire to attend college.
Alba Martinez, president and CEO of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, emphasizes that mentoring is essential because academic success is a key factor in achieving life success for Philadelphia’s students.
This year's Shadowing Day was part of the sixth annual National Mentoring Month celebration, highlighting the importance of mentoring, recruiting new mentors, engaging businesses in the program, and acknowledging the valuable contributions of current mentors in their communities.
