3 Key Realities About Adult Education
Summary
As an instructor at a state college, I've observed that today’s students are just as likely to be middle-aged (or older) as they are teenagers. Often, I find myself offering pep talks to adults considering a return to school. One common concern among them is the fear of not keeping up with younger classmates. Let me assure you, this is far from the truth. Here are three reasons why older students often excel beyond their younger peers in the classroom.
Motivation
Older students tend to be more motivated. Frequently, they are paying their own tuition and thus value their education more. They've experienced the workforce without a degree and are driven to secure the financial and professional benefits that further education can offer. This motivation propels them through academic challenges that might sidetrack less experienced students. They’ve learned that a positive attitude is key to success.
Time Management
Nontraditional students often have superior time management skills. Balancing work, school, and family responsibilities makes them highly efficient. Their life experiences have taught them to prioritize commitments effectively. I notice younger students sometimes struggle due to poor time management, but older students are typically adept at handling their schedules.
Life Experience
Life experience brings knowledge. Those who’ve worked, raised families, and engaged with their communities possess a deep understanding of interpersonal dynamics and real-world issues. While younger students might excel in scientific knowledge or study habits, older students have a wider grasp of practical matters and current events.
While these strengths are not universal?"some younger students are highly motivated and well-organized, just as some older students may struggle?"the general trend is clear. Motivation, time management, and life experience often give nontraditional students an edge. If age is your barrier to pursuing education, remember it also brings valuable advantages.
