Open Letter to Richard Dawkins and Channel 4 Television

Dear Richard Dawkins and Channel 4,

I recently watched your program broadcast on January 16th and felt compelled to address some concerns. You expressed indignation about Christians and Jews teaching their faith to their children, yet what you propose about the origin of life also requires faith. This belief is imparted to millions through the education system and media, much like religious teachings.

None of us witnessed the beginning of life, so all beliefs in this realm are inherently acts of faith. The scientific conclusions you support are often more speculative than definitive. I have yet to find satisfactory answers from evolutionists on several fundamental questions:

1. Origin of Matter: Where did the matter involved in the Big Bang originate?

2. Order from Chaos: The Big Bang suggests an ordered universe emerged from an explosion, yet explosions typically result in chaos. How did such a complex and life-sustaining planet arise randomly?

3. DNA Complexity: Darwin gave little insight into the origin of the first life form. With the discovery of DNA, we now understand the immense complexity of cells. How could such intricate information arise by chance? These life forms also needed self-reproduction, a highly complex process essential for survival.

4. Organ Complexity: Darwin himself found the natural selection of complex organs like the eye to be implausible. You’ve mentioned that evolution might craft a functioning fish eye over countless generations, but how did creatures survive without crucial organs like the eye, heart, or brain?

5. Transitional Forms: Darwin noted the lack of transitional forms in fossil records. While variation within species (such as finch beaks) is observable, there’s no evidence of one species evolving into another. Furthermore, how did flightless birds evolve wings over millennia without being vulnerable to predators?

While you may have answers that satisfy you, these don’t convince everyone. You suggest that life arose from nothingness, an explosion crafted an orderly universe, and complex forms of life emerged spontaneously. I find these difficult to believe. Yet, you are free to teach these ideas to children while dismissing those who question them without offering a balanced platform for discourse.

In your program, you selectively portrayed religious figures. The Christians interviewed ranged from extreme US evangelicals to liberal figures like the Bishop of Oxford, who shares many of your views.

Regarding the Bible, your selective quotes misrepresent its teachings. The story of Abraham and Isaac, for instance, highlights that Isaac was not sacrificed, contrasting with the child sacrifices prevalent in surrounding pagan cultures. Such sacrifices are condemned in the Bible. Moreover, contemporary parallels can be drawn with the disregard for unborn life today. A deeper exploration of Genesis 22 reveals profound messages about faith.

You also claimed that scientific developments linked to evolution have benefited humanity. Yet, history shows otherwise. Nietzsche, influenced by Darwinism, argued against pity, echoing sentiments later adopted by Nazis to justify the Holocaust. Similarly, Soviet Communism employed works like Engels' "The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man" to promote atheism, culminating in atrocities like the gulags and KGB.

In terms of societal well-being, your program concluded that modern morals are thriving. However, we face a potential collapse of social and economic structures, marked by substance abuse, sexual immorality, family breakdowns, violence, and environmental degradation. These issues stem from rejecting God and the salvation offered through Jesus Christ, not from following Him.

I urge Channel 4 to consider hosting an unbiased debate featuring knowledgeable Christians on these important issues.

Sincerely,
Tony Pearce
