The Nature of Normal Personality
Exploring the Concept of Normal Behavior
What does it mean to be normal? Who can be considered normal?
Understanding Personality
Personality disorders represent disruptions in our core identity, affecting every aspect of who we are. Since our personality influences all facets of our mental state, its impact is all-encompassing. In my recent article, "What is Personality?", I explore the nuanced differences between "personality," "character," and "temperament." However, a persistent question remains: what defines normal behavior, and who is truly normal?
The Limits of Social Norms
Some might argue that normal behavior is simply what is statistically average or most common. However, this answer is limited and unsatisfactory. Adhering to societal norms doesn’t necessarily equate to being normal. Historical examples, such as Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia, reveal how conformity in those societies often meant embracing cruelty and injustice.
A Psychological Perspective
Instead of relying on societal standards, many mental health experts focus on whether a person is functioning well and feeling content (known as being ego-syntonic). If so, they may be deemed normal. In contrast, abnormal traits and behaviors are seen as those that cause dysfunction and distress. Yet, this view is imperfect?"many mentally ill individuals appear happy and functional.
Questioning the Concept of Normalcy
Some scholars dismiss the idea of "normalcy" entirely. The anti-psychiatry movement criticizes the tendency to medicalize vast areas of human behavior, while others prefer investigating disorders themselves rather than defining them against an ideal mental state.
I align with the latter perspective, choosing to focus on the characteristics and impacts of mental health disorders instead of seeking an elusive definition of mental health.
