Youth Rescue Endangered Horses from Afar

Separated by almost 3,000 miles, the small town of Salmon, Idaho and Abaco Island in the Bahamas don't seem to have much in common. However, when the local Salmon 4-H Model Horse Club heard about the endangered Abaco Barb horses, they sprang into action.
"We learned from our 4-H leader that the Abaco Barb horses were nearing extinction, and we felt compelled to help," shared 11-year-old club member, Cameron Angeny.
The Abaco Barb, a rare strain of the Spanish Barb breed, is thought to be descended from horses of the Spanish Conquistadors, surviving shipwrecks 500 years ago. Due to human interference and habitat changes, only nine of these horses remain from the original 200.
Drawing on the skills they honed by keeping 4-H records, Cameron and his fellow club members crafted a plan. They reached out to Breyer Animal Creations with a request to create a model horse to raise awareness.
Impressed by the initiative of these young members, Breyer decided to develop an Abaco Barb model for their 2005 line and launched an annual benefit model horse program.
"These young people have been an inspiration to us all," said Kathleen Fallon from Breyer. "They've learned an invaluable lesson about making a difference."
The first model in the series, Capella, named after one of the stallions, became one of the top five sellers in 2005. A portion of the profits from Capella supports Arkwild, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Abaco Barbs by providing medical care and a safe habitat.
The 4-H club diligently continues its efforts through the Abaco Barb Youth Project, encouraging others to join the cause.
Cameron urges other young people to take on big projects. "Once you have an idea, put it on paper and work to achieve it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I can make a difference in the world!"
4-H is a nationwide community where young people learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills.
