Overview
The University of Calicut was established on July 23, 1968, through Ordinance No. 5/68 of the Government of Kerala. This ordinance was later replaced by the Calicut University Act of 1975. The university aims to enhance higher education and foster research across various fields, particularly focusing on technical and technological sectors. It also promotes the art and culture of Kerala, supports educationally disadvantaged communities, and aids in the development of the less developed regions in northern Kerala. With the establishment of Kannur University in 1995, Calicut University's jurisdiction now includes the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad (excluding the Mananthavady taluk).
Campus
The main campus is located in Thenhipalam, Malappuram district, about 23 kilometers south of Kozhikode city, spanning 200 hectares on either side of NH-17. Key facilities include the Administrative Office, Pareeksha Bhavan, School of Distance Education, University Press, Publication Department, University Engineering Department, and student and staff accommodations. The campus also boasts a well-equipped library, Audio Visual Research Center, Computer Center, Science and Instrumentation Center, Guest House, seminar complex, School of Health Sciences, University Health Center, supermarket, canteen, and various other amenities like a bank, post office, and gymnasium.
Academic and Research Facilities
The university has several fully-fledged teaching departments and numerous centers and schools. It has two main extension centers in Thrissur and Calicut, with another being established in Vatakara. Teacher Education Centers are spread across the five districts, and there are advanced computer science centers in 13 locations offering MCA, MSc Computer, and BSc IT courses. The Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology (CUIET) is located just 400 meters from Kohinoor on NH-17.
Affiliated Colleges
The University of Calicut affiliates over 150 colleges, including teacher training, engineering, medical, law, IHRD centers, fine arts colleges, and institutions offering courses in dentistry, nursing, and homeopathy.
