For millennia, as we gazed at the stars, we've yet to find another planet quite like Earth. Interestingly, a deeper look inward reveals that our planet is structured in layers, much like an onion.
A Complex Layered Planet
Earth's onion-like structure sparks debates, especially regarding what constitutes its layers. Nonetheless, several widely accepted categories define Earth's composition.
The Lithosphere
The lithosphere is the solid ground we inhabit. It consists of Earth's crust and the upper, brittle part of the mantle beneath it. Averaging about 100 kilometers in thickness, this layer includes oceans, mountains, deep canyons, and tectonic plates.
The Mantle
Beneath the lithosphere lies the mantle, composed of hot, molten rock. This layer is where new crust forms and old crust is recycled. Although empirical evidence is limited due to its depth and heat, scientists study new material emerging at tectonic plate boundaries to understand its composition.
In the upper portion of the mantle, the asthenosphere exists. Known for its volatility due to intense pressure and heat, the asthenosphere is where Earth's crust begins to melt.
The Outer Core
Located several thousand miles below the crust, the outer core's exact depth remains uncertain. This layer is a highly pressurized liquid, roughly 2,200 kilometers thick, consisting of a nickel-iron alloy. It is believed to be the source of Earth's magnetic field.
The Inner Core
At Earth's center lies the inner core, about which little is known beyond basic principles. Primarily composed of iron, it is incredibly dense. Due to gravity and extreme pressures, the inner core is thought to be solid.
