Transforming Lexington Elementary School
At Lexington Elementary School in Monroe, La., parents and teachers were concerned about the school’s declining performance. Attendance and standardized test scores were dropping, while suspensions were on the rise.
To address these issues, school administrators introduced Lions Quest, a life-skills program. Teachers, after completing workshops, collaborated with students to enhance relationship skills and responsible decision-making, upheld high academic standards, and engaged in community service learning projects.
After five years, the change was extraordinary. Lexington boasted the highest test scores and attendance rates in the district.
"We can see and feel the difference," said Principal Lynn Hodge. "Our students are more responsible. They can listen and work together."
Nationwide Success with Lions Quest
Teachers across the country have reported similar positive outcomes with Lions Quest. The program equips educators from kindergarten through 12th grade with tools to teach responsibility, conflict resolution, communication skills, and awareness of drug and alcohol dangers. Schools receive books and materials to support these efforts.
Sponsored by Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization, Lions Quest has reached over 11 million youth and trained more than 333,000 educators. The program is highly rated by government and educational groups.
Studies over the past 20 years show that Lions Quest students achieve better test scores, develop healthier attitudes toward substance abuse and violence, and exhibit lower rates of disciplinary issues and dropout rates. They also show decreased use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
Impact at Westside High School
Two years ago, Westside High School in Memphis, Tenn., faced tragedy when a 15-year-old student died in a gang initiation fight. In response, students involved in Lions Quest organized an assembly against violence, established peer support groups, and participated in community service. The school quickly recovered.
"Lions Quest gave Westside students the opportunity to step forward and participate," said teacher Nancy Byrd, highlighting the program’s role in empowering student leadership.
