With the rise of computers, solitaire became a household favorite due to its simplicity and addictive nature. However, enthusiasts soon sought new variations, with Klondike emerging as a top choice. Although it gained popularity in the late 19th century, its origins may trace back to miners in the Alaskan and Californian mountains.
How to Play Klondike
Despite its straightforward nature, Klondike offers a challenging and invigorating experience. Here's how to set it up:
1. Layout the Cards:
- Begin by placing a card face up on the table.
- To its left, lay down six cards face down.
- Add another face-up card to the second column.
- Continue this pattern, adding face-up cards followed by face-down cards in the remaining columns.
By the end, you'll have seven columns, with the last one holding seven cards. Ensure you have 24 cards in hand for playing.
Objective
Your aim is to organize all cards into four suited sequences, starting from aces to kings. When you uncover an ace, place it aside and build upon it with the next card in succession (e.g., from an ace to a king). Each sequence must match its suit.
Meanwhile, create descending sequences on the table by alternating colors. For example, a six of clubs can have a five of diamonds or hearts beneath it, but not another black card.
Revealing Downturned Cards
Once you use the face-up cards, reveal the card beneath. If you clear a column, you can start a new one with a king, just like in regular solitaire.
Moving Sequences
Move entire card sequences between columns, provided you maintain the descending sequence with alternating colors.
Using the Cards in Hand
To play from your hand, reveal the top three cards. Use only the top card, unveiling the next as you go through them. Continue in groups of three, and once finished, recycle the pile to begin again.
