Outdoor Classrooms: A Smart Way to Teach Teens
Summary
Learning doesn't always thrive within four walls. Experts are increasingly turning to nature to impart valuable life lessons to teenagers.Article
Learning can happen anywhere, and some of the most effective classrooms are outside traditional school settings. Experts highlight a growing trend: using the great outdoors to teach teens important life skills.
Take Matt Schmitz, for example. At 18, he's a typical high school senior gearing up for graduation. Yet, his leadership skills are already advanced?"skills that many adults work years to develop.
At 15, Schmitz learned about the Yellowstone Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), a program by the National Park Service that combines education with outdoor experiences. "Knowing Yellowstone intimately is unique," he said. "It was a chance to spend a summer outdoors and gain independence."
Each year, 30-35 teenagers participate in the YCC, a program that blends work, learning, and earning. Teens gain experience in conservation, ecosystem preservation, environmental engineering, and leadership while earning minimum wage. Tasks include building bridges, repairing cabins, and maintaining trails.
Since its inception in 1990, YCC has been fully funded by the Moose fraternal organization's Community Service program. Their partnership began after devastating fires in 1988 prompted the formation of the Yellowstone Youth Fund to aid restoration. Since 1989, the group has contributed over $2 million ($135,000 annually) to support the YCC.
"The Moose is proud to offer this program nationwide," said Shawn M. Baile, Director of Community Service for Moose International. "It's a testament to our commitment to families and community service."
Schmitz's involvement has sparked friendships across the country. "I've met people I never would have otherwise," he noted. "The program encourages personal growth. It's not just a summer camp?"it's work focused on teamwork," explained Schmitz.
