Understanding Learner Preferences
When was the last time school directors asked students how they prefer to learn? While conducting a needs analysis to determine what students want to learn is common, exploring their preferred learning styles is less so. This is noteworthy because many teachers come from similar backgrounds, having been trained in Western educational methods that emphasize active participation and seeing teachers as facilitators rather than lecturers. However, students often feel more comfortable with teaching methods they are accustomed to.
Adapting to Student Expectations
I vividly recall teaching a group of 30 students at a French university, expecting active participation, only to find they were used to passively receiving information. These students typically learned through listening, reading, and writing, rather than engaging in spoken activities. Although I wanted to introduce more interactive methods, I realized the importance of understanding their expectations, desires, and negotiating more effective teaching approaches with them.
Gathering Student Feedback
Regularly surveying students could provide valuable insights into how they believe classrooms should be managed, the materials they prefer, how work should be organized, and the activities they find beneficial. Such feedback is invaluable, especially when it differs from a teacher’s own approach. By understanding student preferences, teachers can better assess which aspects of their teaching to adapt and which new methods to introduce gradually, ensuring a more comfortable and effective learning experience.
By focusing on how students wish to learn, we can enhance their educational journey and improve the overall teaching experience.
