Throughout America's 230-year history, the government seems to have strayed from its original purpose: serving the people according to their will, rather than dictating what’s best for them.
A recent example is the Internet Gambling Ban signed into law by President Bush. This legislation makes it illegal for banks and credit card companies to transfer funds to casinos for wagering on games like roulette, blackjack, and poker.
While millions of Americans enjoy these games responsibly, the government has prohibited online casinos due to some individuals developing gambling addictions. This decision echoes past government actions, such as the alcohol prohibition of the early 1900s. Instead of educating citizens on the dangers of excessive drinking, the government banned alcohol altogether.
Contrary to its intent, this prohibition increased alcohol consumption and gave rise to organized crime in the production and distribution of illegal alcohol. Recognizing the policy's failure, the government eventually repealed the law.
Similarly, the ongoing War on Drugs, initiated in the 1980s, consumes billions in tax dollars without yielding significant results. Drug prices have risen, leading addicts to crime to support their habits. Prisons are overcrowded with individuals whose main offense is drug possession. Rather than criminalizing drugs, a regulated industry could have redirected tax revenue towards education and universal healthcare.
Please note that I am not advocating for the legalization of hard drugs. However, the current system is not effective. I do support legalizing online casino gambling. If I choose to play blackjack or poker from home, why should the government have the right to prevent me? How is it logical to ban online casino play when I can visit a local casino freely?
Enforcing this ban will require costly investments in software and hardware to monitor financial transactions?"costs that taxpayers will bear. Instead, regulating and taxing online casinos could generate revenue to improve the lives of the many Americans living below the poverty line or experiencing homelessness.
The American government needs to reconsider its approach of treating citizens like dependents, or the people may need to demand a change in governance.
