Cleveland Schools Focus on Health for Students and Teachers

Overview

In an effort to boost health and self-confidence, 83 students and teachers from seven Cleveland schools are participating in the "Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge." This 11-week initiative is a collaboration between Cleveland Schools and the Cleveland YMCA.

The Challenge

The "Motivating Movement Through Marathoning Challenge" emerged from the Cleveland Department of Public Health's nationally-funded Steps to a Healthier Cleveland program. It encourages running and walking among youth, aiming to address growing concerns about health and obesity. Participants engage in exercises and work towards a cumulative distance of 26.2 miles, equivalent to the Cleveland/Rite Aid Marathon. Schools involved include Denison, Sunbeam, Emile B. deSauze, Orchard, Buckeye-Woodland, Tremont, and Willow.

Students receive support and guidance from YMCA mentors and enjoy a complimentary four-month YMCA membership. Each week, they cover 2.5 miles. A milestone celebration was held at the 10-mile mark, leading up to the city's 29th annual Rite Aid Marathon. Participants were surprised with a talk by four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers, Asics running shoes, T-shirts, and official marathon medals.

Recognition for Health Initiatives

At Daniel E. Morgan School, part of Cleveland Schools, several teachers and staff were honored with the prestigious Governor’s Gold Award under the Healthy Ohioans initiative. The school excelled in promoting healthy choices, physical education, nutrition, and tobacco education. The award will be presented at a ceremony in August.

Teachers Tackle Weight Loss

Seventeen teachers at Emile B. deSauze School embarked on an eight-week weight loss challenge. Motivated by a competitive spirit and guided by their physical education teacher, they lost a combined total of 111 pounds. In recognition, the American Heart Association treated them to a healthy breakfast and gifted Go Red for Women wristbands.

This initiative underscores Cleveland Schools’ dedication to fostering healthier lifestyles for both students and staff.
