Tragic Xbox-Related Murder Case to Go to Trial
In a chilling event on August 6, 2004, six people were brutally murdered in a horrifying attack. The victims were Michelle Ann Nathan, 19; Erin Belanger, 22; Francisco Ayo-Roman, 30; Anthony Vega, 34; Roberto Gonzalez, 28; and Jonathan Gleason, 17, along with two small dogs. Many were asleep during the attack, unable to defend themselves.
The shocking motive behind the crime was an Xbox game. The attackers had been squatting illegally in one victim's grandparents' home. When some clothing and an Xbox game were taken from the house, the intruders were enraged.
A Walmart clerk reported that the group had been laughing and joking about violence. Just two days prior, they purchased baseball bats. The ensuing violence was gruesome and senseless.
The trial for this tragic case is about to commence after being relocated due to heavy media coverage. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the accused. Their case is significantly strengthened by testimony from Robert Cannon, 19, who agreed to cooperate in exchange for a life sentence. The remaining defendants are Troy Victorino, 29, Michael Salas, 20, and Jerone Hunter, 20.
The defendants face multiple charges, including six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of desecrating a human body. Troy Victorino, identified as the ringleader, had a history of violence and had recently been released on a low bond after attacking a friend.
Given the overwhelming evidence, the prosecution has a strong case. The defense faces a challenging battle in what is expected to be a lengthy trial lasting approximately two months, now set to take place in St. Augustine.
