The New Dark Ages
Summary:
Despite the unprecedented availability of information, education seems to be in decline, leading to a rise in irrational beliefs and a retreat from genuine intellectualism.---
Growing up in an Israeli slum, I believed that knowledge and education would liberate me from my circumstances. However, as an adult, I find myself in a world where functional literacy is rare even in developed countries. Here, "culture" revolves around sports and music, science is often labeled as evil, and irrationality thrives through religion, the occult, and conspiracy theories.
True scholars and intellectuals are increasingly withdrawing into the metaphorical ivory towers. Their spaces are being taken over by self-proclaimed "experts," bloggers, wannabe authors, and supporters of self-serving causes.
The results are disheartening: platforms like Wikipedia allow editing by anonymous users without credentials, and movements like environmentalism and alternative medicine sometimes stifle dissent aggressively. The media is dominated by soap operas and reality TV, while reading continues to decline. Except for a few credible outlets, the “new media” consists mostly of biased opinions and fabricated news, drowning out reliable information in a sea of misinformation.
This contradicts the notion of progress. The more texts we make accessible online and the more research we publish, the less educated people seem to become. Individuals are turning to visuals and sounds over the written word, seeking comfort rather than challenge.
Even those eager to learn are overwhelmed by an uncontrollable flood of data, mixing genuine science with pseudo-science. Unable to distinguish between the two, a "democracy of knowledge" emerges where everyone’s opinion is equally valued, regardless of credibility. This relativism threatens to usher in a new "Dark Age," hopefully only a brief pause between eras of true enlightenment.
