Drawing from a Hat
One of my favorite techniques is using a hat?"or any container?"to draw random selections. You can choose what goes into the hat, whether it's you or the students who do the drawing. I like to keep the container above the chooser's head to ensure the draw remains fair.
I use different colored poker chips: white, red, and blue. These are applicable for various scenarios involving three possible outcomes. For instance, when grading freewrites, drawing a blue chip means I grade the assignment immediately. A white chip indicates that the writing is acknowledged but not graded, while a red chip means I’ll read, grade, and provide feedback on some of the work. This randomness encourages students to consistently do their best while sparing the teacher from grading every single paper.
This system works for minor homework, too. White means no grade, blue goes straight into the grade book, and with red, students get a moment to correct mistakes before submitting. The unpredictability keeps students on their toes.
Using Random Paper Strips
For activities like games or discussing topics, I use strips of paper in a mug for random choices. This can determine discussion topics or questions to be answered.
For project topics, write numbers on slips of paper corresponding to the number of students in class. Students draw their number, which then determines their order of topic selection. This strategy is particularly effective for ensuring a fair distribution of research topics without repetition.
Forming Random Groups
To create random groups, use slips of colored paper. Decide the number of groups and prepare slips for each group using different colors. Everyone picks a slip, forming random teams. This method can reutilize leftover art paper, ensuring durability and reuse.
Everyday Items for Random Choices
Everyday items like coins, dice, or playing cards can introduce randomness effectively. In scenarios with two choices, a coin flip works well, while dice can offer more options.
Randomly Calling on Students
To ensure equitable participation, I use note cards filled with student details. At the year’s start, students note their names, contact info, textbook numbers, and interests on a 3 x 5 card. I shuffle these cards when calling on students, providing a fair selection. If you want to ensure equal opportunity, don’t shuffle; simply rotate the deck.
