On April 6, 2006, Mable, a robust 295-pound Asian elephant, was born at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC) in central Florida. This $5 million facility, founded 11 years ago by Ringling Bros., focuses on the conservation and study of Asian elephants.
Established in 1995, the 200-acre, state-of-the-art CEC provides care for both young and retired circus elephants. In the wild, these majestic creatures face threats from poachers targeting their ivory tusks and the destruction of their natural habitat. Facilities like the CEC aim to offer a sanctuary where elephants can thrive.
The CEC also welcomes researchers such as Bets Rasmussen from the University of Oregon, who is examining the pheromones emitted by older male elephants. These pheromones play a crucial role in mating behaviors and social dynamics within elephant communities.
Recognized as one of the most successful Asian elephant breeding programs outside Southeast Asia, the Ringling Bros. CEC is committed to the breeding, research, and retirement of these endangered giants. To date, the facility has welcomed 20 Asian elephants, including recent arrivals Irvin and Aree. Here, the elephants enjoy a rich diet, consuming around 2.5 tons of hay daily, while also contributing to vital research on the species.
With only an estimated 35,000 Asian elephants remaining worldwide, conservation efforts like those at the CEC are more critical than ever. Through dedicated care and groundbreaking research, these endeavors help ensure a brighter future for these magnificent animals.
