The Solar Decathlon
Overview
Every two years, the U.S. Department of Energy hosts the Solar Decathlon, a unique competition inviting university teams globally to innovate in solar technology. The winning team is awarded a $100,000 grant over two years to further their research and development efforts.
A Unique Competition
The Solar Decathlon is a creative initiative by the Department of Energy to advance solar technology. It selects 20 teams from numerous applicants to participate in this exciting challenge. The objective? Design and build a residential home powered entirely by solar energy. This includes fulfilling the needs of a home-based business and typical residential transportation.
Not only must teams design and construct these homes, but they must also assemble them on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., showcasing their work to the public. The team with the most energy-efficient design wins the competition and the substantial grant to continue their solar research.
Past and Upcoming Contests
In 2005, the University of Colorado clinched the victory, with Cornell and Cal Poly taking second and third places respectively. This marked Colorado’s second consecutive win, beating out prestigious schools such as MIT and Cal Poly.
For the upcoming 2007 competition, the following teams have been chosen and are diligently working on their projects:
- California Polytechnic State University
- Carnegie Mellon University
- Cornell University
- Georgia Institute of Technology
- Kansas State University
- Lawrence Technological University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- New York Institute of Technology
- Team Montreal
- Technische Universität Darmstadt
- Texas A&M University

- Universidad de Puerto Rico
- Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
- University of Cincinnati
- University of Colorado
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The culmination of their efforts will be on display on the National Mall on October 7, 2007. With the Bush Administration showing renewed interest in solar power, there’s hope for a special Presidential visit to the event.
