What a Black Belt Means to Me: A Way of Life
Introduction
Achieving a black belt in martial arts is far more than just reaching another rank?"it's a significant milestone that many aspire to but few attain. This accomplishment requires immense dedication and perseverance. What seems like a never-ending journey as a kyu rank (beginner) transforms into an incredible achievement once you earn your black belt.
When I achieved my Sho Dan at 13, I felt a profound sense of pride. I even slept with my belt most nights, taking it everywhere I went?"from the store to sleepovers.
The Responsibility of a Black Belt
What I didn’t realize at the time was the responsibility that accompanies being a black belt. It wasn't until I became a full-time instructor, and later when I stepped back from teaching, that I truly understood this. As black belts, we become role models. Our students look up to us in the same way we idolized our favorite athletes as children.
Our actions are closely watched and often mimicked by students and their families. I embrace this role wholeheartedly because I want to make a positive impact on young martial artists. Inspiring self-confidence in a child is far more rewarding than seeing them struggle through their formative years.
A Black Belt as a Way of Life
So, what does a black belt mean to me? It's a way of life. I focus more on the journey rather than the destination, because in martial arts, there is no ultimate pinnacle. It's an endless path of growth. As I embark on opening my own dojo, the significance of being a San Dan deepens. My goal is to be the best martial artist I can be, so I can teach my future students the beauty of Wado-Ryu.
Upholding Tradition
Our instructors, and those before them, imparted lessons on how to carry ourselves both physically and mentally as black belts. This responsibility is passed down to us as an unwritten tradition that we must continue. It’s our duty to preserve and teach these values to future generations?"because it's the essence of martial arts. We are the leaders of our dojos.
