Embracing a Beginner's Mind as a Karate Instructor

As karate instructors and experienced martial artists, it's crucial to remember our roots and the journey that led us to where we are today. Our paths were not always smooth, and sharing our own mistakes and experiences can greatly benefit our students. It illustrates that we, too, are human and have faced similar challenges in our practice. Here's a personal story from my martial arts development.

During a lesson on a hot summer evening in Japan, Ichihara-sensei was teaching us oizuki (front punch). Suddenly, an inspiration struck me?"not the punch, thankfully, but a realization. Despite 14 years of training, I discovered I was making a fundamental error in executing a basic front punch. While I've since corrected the mistake, the true lesson that evening was about the importance of maintaining a Beginner's Mind.

We all have moments when we feel invincible?"when confidence and ego take over. It's easy to become self-proclaimed experts, believing we've mastered a skill. But just as easily, something can bring us back to earth. A good golfer might miss the ball, or a soccer player might stumble in front of an open goal. Similarly, in the dojo, a senior student might perform a front kick and unexpectedly slip, blaming the perfectly flat floor.

Such incidents remind us of the value of a Beginner's Mind. Beginners often display great concentration, heightened awareness, and a strong desire to succeed. Their mistakes stem from a lack of knowledge, not focus. As seasoned practitioners, we should reconnect with the excitement we felt as beginners?"learning new techniques, mastering the next kata sequence, or successfully blocking an opponent’s attack.

A Beginner's Mind opens us up to learning, criticism, and growth. It helps us rise with a smile after a fall rather than an attitude.
