The Great Muskie Challenge

My family and I arrived at our summer cabin in Mercer, Wisconsin, the night before. Determined to be among the first fishermen on the lake, I rolled out of my sleeping bag before dawn. Grabbing my flashlight, I untied our boat and eased it into the water. After securing it to the pier, I headed to the cabin where my parents were sleeping to find the oars. My parents preferred the comfort of the cabin over roughing it in a tent like me.

With the oars retrieved and my ice chest packed with ice and a couple of sodas, daylight had arrived. It was time to embark on my mission: catching a Muskie. Though only a dozen had been caught in Long Lake over the past two years, my 12-year-old self was determined.

Unbeknownst to me, early morning was not the ideal time for Muskies, especially with the wind blowing. But undeterred, I rowed about 250 yards toward a small island, navigating to a patch of reeds that extended 50 feet into the water. I wasn’t alone; two other boats were already nearby.

Standing on the back seat of the boat, I cast my Pikey Minnow lure just a foot from the edge of the reeds. It was a perfect cast. As I started reeling it in, the water erupted?"a large tail emerged. Instinct took over, and I jerked the pole, bending it nearly in half. I knew I’d hooked a big one.

For a good three or four minutes, I battled the fish, determined to see its size. When it finally came close, I realized just how massive it was. Shouting for help, one of the nearby fishermen kindly rowed over and joined me in the boat. Clearly experienced, he had both a net and a small gun. He expertly netted the Muskie, then shot it, ensuring it wouldn’t thrash around. We hoisted it aboard and tucked it under the wooden floor grate.

The fisherman congratulated me on my catch, and I thanked him for his help. After he returned to his boat, I eagerly rowed back to shore. My parents and I took the catch to Long Lake Lodge for weighing and measuring. It was an impressive 46.5 inches long and weighed 28 pounds 6 ounces. I was thrilled, and my parents beamed with pride.

That night, as I crawled into my sleeping bag, I knew I had conquered The Great Muskie Challenge.
