The Big Ten Report
Overview
The Big Ten Conference is shaping up as a two-team showdown with Michigan and Ohio State leading the pack. We're now just a week away from their much-anticipated face-off. Both teams barely scraped through last weekend with narrow victories against weaker opponents. Following them is a clear No. 3 team, located just 25 minutes from our main office in Wisconsin.
Previously, I mentioned that Wisconsin and Iowa were contenders for the third spot and a Capitol One Bowl berth. However, Iowa's recent struggles may impact their performance in the coming week. Notably, Coach Ferentz has a winning streak in this rivalry, and it will be interesting to see if he can rally his team after a challenging season. Below are highlights from last weekend and a look ahead.
Recent Highlights
Iowa vs. Northwestern
Iowa was favored by 20 points hosting Northwestern but suffered a surprising defeat. Northwestern seized control early, scoring two touchdowns and intercepting a crucial pass. The first half ended 14-0, and despite further opportunities, the score could have been even more lopsided.
The second half mirrored the first, with limited offense from both sides, each adding just one touchdown. Northwestern dominated yardage with over 200 yards rushing and passing, reminiscent of the days under Randy Walker. They now face a winnable game against Illinois soon.
Iowa has faced two embarrassing losses, also falling to Indiana, and may find it hard to secure future wins. This weekend, they host Wisconsin with QB John Stocco's status affecting the betting line. The Badgers have a strong chance to break their losing streak against Iowa.
Wisconsin vs. Penn State
Wisconsin nearly confirmed their trip to Orlando with a win over Penn State. The game, dominated by defense, totaled just 16 points. The Badgers took a 13-3 lead in the fourth quarter after a crucial punt miscue by Penn State.
The victory was overshadowed by a leg injury to 79-year-old Coach Joe Paterno, who is expected to return in some capacity against Temple. With Penn State favored by 35 points, his absence might not hurt them much.
Purdue vs. Michigan State
Purdue is one win away from a bowl game after defeating Michigan State 17-15. Michigan State briefly led in the fourth quarter, but Purdue regained the lead with a late field goal.
Statistically, both teams were evenly matched, but Michigan State's inability to maintain leads continues to plague them. As Purdue faces two weaker opponents, they could finish the season with nine wins, facing Hawaii in their final game.
Conference Outlook
Currently, six of the eleven teams in the conference are slated for bowl games. Indiana could secure a seventh spot with an upset in one of their last two games against Michigan or Purdue. The conference is likely to receive two BCS bids with the Ohio State-Michigan loser heading to the Rose Bowl, and the winner progressing to Glendale.
National College Football Thoughts
1. Arkansas: Although pulling off wins, their lack of a passing game may lead to losses in upcoming tough matches.
2. Louisville/West Virginia: This game delivered as expected, and if Louisville remains unbeaten, they could contend for the National Championship.
3. Florida: Having faced a challenging schedule, they are favorites to win the SEC and would likely defeat Arkansas if matched up in Atlanta.
This week, we're backing our College Game of the Year, following an impressive run in football weekends.
Free Pick: Boise State by 13 over San Jose State.
