North Korea's Hidden Casinos
The existence of casinos in North Korea might surprise many. Known as the "Hermit Kingdom," North Korea is the world's last Stalinist regime, famous for its tight control and extreme restrictions. Mobile phones are largely prohibited, and radios are fixed to receive only state broadcasts to prevent access to outside information. It's the first hereditary Communist dictatorship, with a reputation for oppression and economic inefficiency, struggling even to feed its population.
Despite these constraints, North Korea defies expectations with its casinos?"two confirmed, possibly three. The first, located in the capital Pyongyang, is aptly named the Pyongyang Casino. Its existence is somewhat of a mystery, as North Koreans are barred from entering, and the annual number of tourists barely reaches a few hundred. It seemingly caters to the limited foreign diplomats and businesspeople in the area.
The second, the Seaview Casino Hotel in Rajin, boasts 16 tables and 52 slot machines. Some believe it's the same as or closely linked to the Emperor Casino in the Rajin-Songbong economic zone near China. The Emperor Casino was intended to serve Chinese gamblers, as gambling in China was largely illegal. However, when Chinese authorities discovered government officials embezzling funds to gamble, they sealed the border, leaving the casino without patrons and effectively shuttered.
Therefore, the status of functioning casinos in North Korea remains ambiguous. While a potential casino exists in Pyongyang and the Emperor Casino stands empty at the Chinese border, their operations are largely unknown and shrouded in mystery.
