Innovative Martial Arts Drills to Keep Students Engaged

I've known Helen for years. She’s tough, smart, and for the past two years, has been leading a Kuk Sool Won class that shapes disciplined martial artists capable of delivering powerful punches. Recently, while in the area to meet Helen for lunch, I decided to drop in on one of her late morning sessions. It had been a while since my last Kuk Sool Won training, and I was surprised by some of the drills.

After the class, we headed to our favorite Thai restaurant, and over lunch, I asked, "What's with the machine gun sidekicks? Aren’t those more of a Tae Kwon Do thing?"

For the machine gun sidekicks, you stand on one leg and continuously kick while hopping just enough to let the force move your standing leg forward. It's not about traveling like a jump kick; instead, Helen had us traverse the dojo floor. Those kicks really worked my thighs, and even in the coolness of the restaurant, I could still feel the burn.

"It keeps things interesting," Helen smiled. Assured she wasn’t just being tough, she elaborated, "To keep your students engaged, you need more than just traditional drills. The same exercises, done repetitively, lose their impact over time."

"That makes sense," I nodded. "What other drills do you enjoy using with your students?"

"I like incorporating a variety," Helen explained. "Traveling drills ensure everyone is exerting themselves. Crocodile walks, for example, have you move across the floor face down without letting your torso touch the ground, building body control and strength. Basic exercises, like lunges, are also great for warming up."

She continued, "One of my favorites is having everyone stand straight, place their hands behind their heads, and lift each knee to the chest as if marching. Doing about 25 reps for each leg not only warms you up but also enhances your kicking skills."

I couldn't help but rub my sore muscles. "And you still manage to run a full class after all this?"

"You bet," Helen grinned. "These drills make practice much more engaging."

These innovative approaches by Helen ensure that martial arts training remains dynamic and entertaining, preventing boredom with repetition while enhancing skill.
