My Kung Fu Master Is 200 Years Old
Discovering a Legendary Martial Arts Mentor
I’m passionate about exploring new martial arts styles, particularly the Northern Chinese traditions centered around Wudang Mountain. My journey began with classical Snake Style Kung Fu, transitioning from jiu jutsu, and later delving into the Southern Snake Style, developed by Master Leung Tin Chu in the early 20th century. Master Leung ingeniously combined Shaolin Kung Fu stances with the fluid motions of Wing Chun, sparking my curiosity about Shaolin Kung Fu itself.
Shaolin Kung Fu blends philosophy and spirituality with rigorous physical training. Unlike the Northern styles, which emphasize internal techniques, Shaolin focuses more on physicality, though not to the extent of Tae Kwon Do or Karate.
Eager to deepen my understanding, I sought out a dojo to study the differences first-hand. Shaolin stances are more open and upright, contrasting with the crouched tiger stances I was accustomed to. The emphasis is on arm and hand movements for blocking, often presuming a weapon, like a staff, is in hand, which alters the posture considerably.
Though Shaolin incorporates maneuvers similar to leg braces and push-pull techniques, these are less prevalent than in Northern styles. The blocks are more straightforward, with a focus on punches and upper body work, distinguishing it even from the Southern Snake Style.
At the dojo, Master Jung captured my attention with his agility and expertise. Despite appearing in his 60s or 70s, he effortlessly led students half his age through drills, punches, and classic stances like Tiger, Crane, Snake, and Bear. Witnessing his prowess was like watching a martial arts film come to life.
Regrettably, the school's distance made regular attendance impractical without compromising my commitments as an assistant instructor at my school. Nevertheless, my experience was illuminating. If you’re in search of a dynamic and action-oriented style apart from traditional Kung Fu or Wing Chun, Shaolin Kung Fu is undoubtedly worth exploring!
