How to Play Fantasy Baseball
To dive into fantasy baseball, you first need to join or create a fantasy league. Typically, leagues consist of 10 to 12 teams, but you can find leagues ranging from four to 24 teams. Each team should have a roster of 23 players. Many leagues focus on either American or National League players, which limits the pool of available talent.
Building Your Team Roster
Your team's roster will typically include:
- 9 Pitchers
- 5 Outfielders
- 2 Catchers
- 1 Player for Each of the Three Bases (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
- 1 Middle Infielder
- 1 Corner Infielder
- 1 Miscellaneous Player (a designated hitter in AL leagues or a utility player in NL leagues)
Selecting Your Team: Draft Methods
There are two main methods to select players for your team:
Draft Method
Teams are arranged in a random order, and owners take turns selecting players until each team has 23 players. The draft order typically reverses for even-numbered rounds. Before drafting starts, decide whether the league will reset for the next season or protect seven to 15 players.
Auction Method
Each team owner starts with 260 units of credit. Owners take turns bidding on players in an auction format, with bids increasing by at least one unit. You can enforce a salary cap of 260 units or allow additional purchases after the initial bidding ends.
Player Eligibility
A player can play any position if they appeared there in at least 20 major-league games the previous year. If not, they're eligible for the position they played most frequently. Players can also play any position they appear in during the season.
Scoring in Fantasy Baseball
Cumulative Scoring System
Teams are evaluated in eight categories: batting average, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, earned run average, wins, saves, and WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched). At season’s end, teams are ranked from first to last in each category. In a ten-team league, first place in a category earns ten points, second earns nine, and so on. The team with the highest total score is the champion.
Head-to-Head Scoring System
Based on the same eight categories, teams face off each week. Teams earn a point for each category they win. In cases of ties, additional points may be given. Tie-breakers can include strikeouts, doubles, runs, triples, and home team wins.
By understanding your league’s structure and scoring, you can better strategize your path to victory in fantasy baseball.
