How Self-Centered NFL Players Like Terrell Owens Are Impacting the League
As a former NFL player, I've witnessed firsthand how athletes can influence their teams for better or worse. Recently, a troubling trend has emerged: players prioritizing themselves over their teams. This not only harms the NFL but also negatively impacts young athletes who idolize these self-focused professionals.
In the NFL, players display a variety of personalities. While many exude positivity and commitment to their teams, some seek the spotlight purely for themselves?"a prime example being Terrell Owens and Randy Moss. From my experience, self-centered players can be detrimental, often causing more harm than good.
A major concern is the example these ego-driven players set for youth. When young athletes in junior high, high school, and college see behaviors akin to those of Owens and Moss, they are tempted to emulate them. Instead of fostering teamwork, they adopt a "me-first" attitude. If this trend continues to rise, it could tear apart the fabric of professional sports, turning the NFL into more of a spectacle than the extraordinary team sport it's meant to be.
To the young aspiring athletes: resist following in the footsteps of players like Owens or Moss. These individuals may get away with poor behavior due to their exceptional talent, but without it, they would likely be removed from their teams. Both teammates and coaches generally disdain ego-driven players.
Egoism disrupts a team’s cohesion, especially during the season’s ups and downs. Successful teams thrive on mutual support. Self-focused players revel in victories, claiming credit, but when facing challenges, they often blame others?"teammates or coaches?"for failures. This was evident with Owens during his time with the Eagles, where he frequently pointed fingers at Donovan McNabb. It’s telling that McNabb remained while Owens was eventually suspended and traded.
In contrast, what teams value are leaders such as Brett Favre, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Marvin Harrison. These athletes are renowned for their professionalism, team-first mentality, and positive leadership. If you’re aspiring to emulate a pro athlete, look to these leaders for inspiration. They build successful careers and serve as admirable role models for the next generation.
Choosing to adopt the mindset of a leader rather than an egoist will not only help you excel in the NFL (or any professional sport) but also make you a beacon for future players with dreams of going pro.
