Article:
The World Baseball Classic (WBC) aims to spread baseball's popularity worldwide. Held under the International Baseball Federation's auspices, the event features national teams from across the globe. The first tournament occurred from March 3-20, 2006, across stadiums in Tokyo (Japan), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Orlando (USA), Phoenix (USA), Anaheim (USA), and San Diego (USA).
In its debut, the WBC hosted 16 top baseball nations, divided into four pools:
- Pool A: Japan, China, Korea, Chinese Taipei
- Pool B: Canada, Mexico, South Africa, USA
- Pool C: Cuba, Netherlands, Panama, Puerto Rico
- Pool D: Australia, Dominican Republic, Italy, Venezuela
The tournament followed a round-robin format. Teams competed once against each pool member, with the top two from each pool advancing. Pools A and B winners formed Pool 1, while Pools C and D winners formed Pool 2 for the second round. Each new pool’s top two teams then progressed to a single-elimination semifinal round, followed by a final to crown the champion.
In Pool A, Korea emerged victorious (3-0), with Japan as runner-up. In Pool B, Mexico and the USA both finished with 2-1 records. These teams formed Pool 1 in the second round.
Puerto Rico (3-0) and Cuba (2-1) led Pool C, while the Dominican Republic (3-0) and Venezuela (2-1) topped Pool D, forming Pool 2.
In the second round, Korea (3-0) topped Pool 1, joined by Japan, who advanced due to a tiebreaker despite a 1-2 record. In Pool 2, the Dominican Republic and Cuba both finished 2-1, with the Dominican Republic leading due to a tiebreaker.
The semifinals delivered surprises as runner-ups Japan and Cuba triumphed over Korea and the Dominican Republic. In the final, Japan defeated Cuba to become the inaugural World Baseball Classic champion.
The next WBC is scheduled for 2009, with subsequent tournaments every four years. Live feeds of the first World Baseball Classic can be downloaded from the official WBC website.
