4 Epic Days of Powder Skiing
An Unforgettable Adventure in BC's Backcountry
"Grab your skis and get out here!" Those seven words sparked the most epic adventure of my life, delivered via a phone call from a remote lodge in Eastern British Columbia.
"You won't believe the last two days?"it's been snowing nonstop for 42 hours. Dude, it's nearly waist-deep. We've signed up for another four days, and there's one spot left. Grab your skis and get out here."
Without hesitation, I exclaimed, "I'm in!" Though uncertain about skipping work, the allure of deep powder quickly resolved any doubts. I was thrilled; it had been too long since I'd ventured into the backcountry.
Hurriedly packing clothes, gloves, helmet, goggles, and shifting some funds, I was ready for what promised to be an unforgettable adventure.
Heading to Powder Paradise
I was on my way to Golden, BC, a haven for snowcat skiing, about 80 kilometers north of a quaint mountain town. Friends from Calgary were already experiencing the bliss of waist-deep powder at Chatter Creek and called me after their second day, excitement (and perhaps some alcohol) bubbling through the phone.
The recent heavy snowfall made the journey challenging, with the mountain pass between Golden and Revelstoke intermittently closed for avalanche control. Relief washed over me as I finally arrived in Golden, just in time for the helicopter flight to the lodge.
The Journey Begins
After a quick stop for gum and snacks at 7-11, I headed to the airport, signed a waiver, and boarded the chopper. The 22-minute flight was breathtaking, soaring up the valley with the Selkirks to the left and Rockies to the right. We quickly crossed the Kitchen Range and entered Chatter Creek Drainage, where the lodge's blue roof peeked through the snowy landscape like a sapphire gem.
That first evening was a whirlwind of food, drinks, and enthusiastic faces?"35 kindred spirits buzzing with that unmistakable powder fever. Despite the excitement, sleep eventually came.
An Avalanche of Snow Awaits
Morning greeted us with 22cm of fresh snow atop the 96cm that had already fallen over four days. After breakfast, we attended a safety briefing that covered avalanche awareness and transceiver use, crucial lessons before boarding the snowcats.
The 15-minute ride to the East Ridge set the stage. Extending 7 kilometers east to west, it boasted 2,200 vertical feet of north-facing trees and south-facing cut blocks.
Epic Runs and Unmatched Thrills
Our snowcat stopped at the top of "Bad Boys," a run that began in alpine territory and descended through ancient spruce and larch trees. The guide instructed us to stay center and stop at the tree line before vanishing into a powder cloud.
I dropped in, overtaking a few friends. The first turn was surreal, like there was no bottom. By the third turn, I had my bearings and set my course. Thus began four epic days of powder skiing, each turn carving out memories that would last a lifetime.
The adventure was everything I’d hoped for and more?"a perfect blend of thrill, camaraderie, and the pure joy that only untouched snow can provide. It was a reminder that sometimes, answering a call to adventure can lead to experiences far beyond imagination.
