Reliving the Magic of Chancellor Avenue
Remembering the Past
Transported back to Chancellor Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, circa 1964, I’m reminded of the classic cars?"like the ‘62 Oldsmobile Spitfire and ‘57 and ‘58 Chevys?"cruising past familiar spots like The Bunny Hop, The Burgerama, and Dave's Hot Dog Haven. Our diet seemed to revolve around French fries, hot dogs, and burgers.
A Special Reunion
On May 19th, 2005, I had the joy of joining the Sunday morning gathering of friends who once frequented Chancellor Avenue. This event kept alive the camaraderie we shared. For some, the time machine reached back to the 1920s, with attendees in their 90s. Being one of the younger participants, I felt thrilled.
An Unforgettable Gathering
Over 200 of us from the old neighborhood came together, many from Weequahic High School, while others hailed from South Side High School and Hillside. In our youth, we all played sports like baseball, basketball, softball, or football.
