The Thrill of a Shark Dive in Nassau, Bahamas

Experience the Excitement of Scuba Diving with Sharks

Diving with sharks in the Bahamas is an exhilarating experience every certified diver should try. Typically, spotting a shark during a Caribbean dive is a rare bonus, as they tend to vanish quickly. This is why shark dives in Nassau and Freeport were created?"to offer daring divers the chance to encounter these majestic creatures up close.

I had the opportunity to participate in one of these thrilling dives during a trip to Nassau, on the island of Providence. I chose the scuba operator Dive Dive Dive, though Stuart Coves also offers similar experiences. Our adventure was a two-tank dive, and as we arrived at the first site, Williams Wreck, we spotted Caribbean reef sharks already circling below our boat. The iconic Jaws theme played in my mind.

Our first dive featured a vibrant reef and a small wreck, teeming with marine life, including sharks that kept a respectful distance reminiscent of barracudas. We reached a depth of 69 feet and spent 36 memorable minutes underwater. The ascent was exciting; during our safety stop at 15 feet, the sharks swam curiously close. At one point, a shark positioned itself between me and the boat, but it eventually moved away, allowing me to pass.

For the next part of our adventure, we headed to Shark Alley, the site for the actual shark feeding. We were advised to add extra weight to our belts to ensure we stayed at the bottom. During our surface interval, even more sharks were visible in the water.

Upon descending to the sandy seabed, about 50 feet down, we formed a semi-circle under the guidance of a divemaster. Shortly, another divemaster, clad in a chain mesh suit, descended with a bucket of treats. Almost instantly, over 20 sharks appeared, sparking a surge of excitement in us all.

The divemaster orchestrated a feeding frenzy with a steel rod, teasing the agile 12-foot sharks before offering them food. A third divemaster captured the thrilling scene on video. We were instructed to keep our arms folded to avoid any confusion that might lead to a shark mistaking our limbs for food. The sharks came incredibly close, sometimes brushing against us. Once, a shark's belly even grazed the top of my head, an unforgettable encounter!

These sharks were accustomed to bi-daily feedings, more interested in the divemaster's offerings than in us. Some of us couldn't resist lightly touching their tails as they glided in front of us, against the rules. Alongside the sharks, two fearless groupers observed the scene, one even snatching food before the sharks could.

When the food ran out, the divemaster tipped the bucket, signaling the end. Almost on cue, the sharks vanished, knowing the feast was over. Before heading back to the boat, we explored the sandy bottom for shark teeth. Most of us later purchased the dive video, sharing it with friends who watched with a mix of horror and disbelief.

For seasoned divers, understanding shark behavior adds depth to the experience. The shark dive in Nassau is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and memorable adventures a scuba enthusiast can embark on, sparking endless stories and awe among diving and non-diving friends alike.
