Pool Table Review
Introduction
Looking to choose the perfect pool table? This review offers insights to guide your decision.
My Pool Table Journey
I've played on numerous pool tables over the past 25 years. It all began with a 4x8 table given to my dad when I was about 10. By 15, I was sneaking off to a local tavern to play on their old bar table with a larger cue ball?"something I never quite liked.
At 18, my cousin and I bought a 4x8 Brunswick table, which saw a lot of play. We had to replace the felt multiple times early on. The quality of the cloth is crucial; it influences the table's speed. Avoid cloth with backing as it slows the game. Simonis 860 remains my favorite.
By 21, I partnered with a friend to set up a pool hall using a family-owned building. We invested in two 4.5x9 tables: a Circle G Gandy and a fast-playing Murray. Additionally, we had four 3.5x7 Valley bar tables, one of which I still have today. This size was common for league play and the BCA National Tournament in Las Vegas back then.
Current Favorites
Today, the BCA and APA have transitioned to Diamond Smart Tables. The tavern sponsoring my team features six of these, the only ones in Pueblo, Colorado. Diamond tables have become a favorite, and I'm keeping an eye out for one to add to my home.
Out of all the tables I've used, the 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown with tight pockets and Simonis 860 cloth stands out. Running a rack on these requires skill.
