Pool Billiards: What Term Do You Use?
Summary
When you think of this classic game, do you call it pool or billiards? Do you head to a billiards parlor or a pool hall?Article Body
Recently, I was chatting with an acquaintance who asked me how I spend my free time. I responded that I play in several pool leagues. Confused, they asked, “Pool?” I clarified, “You know, pocket billiards.”The word "pool" often leads people to think about swimming, betting, or even carpooling. To avoid confusion, I usually say, “I play pool in a league. Do you play pocket billiards?”
The terms "pool" and "billiards" may not seem to naturally fit together, yet they are often intertwined. My research revealed that the phrase "pool billiards" was searched 20,144 times last month. It’s a significant number, though small compared to the 416,838 searches for “billiards.”
Interestingly, “billiards parlor” had 95,546 searches. Combined, these top three keywords generate over half a million monthly searches.
In a recent championship match with my APA team, a teammate mentioned that pool might be declining in popularity. While I’m unsure if that’s true, the search numbers show plenty of interest in pool and billiards-related topics.
I wrote this because I often see "pool" and "billiards" together. While the pairing may sound unusual, they click in their own quirky way.
If someone says, “I’m going to play pool,” we understand it as pocket billiards?"it sounds right. But saying, “I’m going to play pool billiards” feels off. Yet, with over 20,000 searches a month, it's a valid keyword phrase for marketers.
Now that I’ve shared this, it’s time to play some pool.
Here's to your success on the table!
