New York Giants 2006 Season Preview
Overview
After finishing 11-6 last season, the New York Giants clinched the NFC East title and advanced to the playoffs. However, much of the season's conversation centered on quarterback Eli Manning and comparisons to his successful brother, Peyton. Unfortunately, Eli underperformed during the playoffs, and the Giants suffered a harsh defeat. This season, they aim for redemption.
Quarterback
Eli Manning is beginning to mature. Initially struggling during away games, he is gradually overcoming his early challenges in the NFL to become a more consistent quarterback. While he still faces issues with pass completion, there is optimism that he will continue to improve. If Eli stays healthy and elevates his performance, he can become a key asset for the team. Currently, he ranks around the middle tier in the league.
Running Back
The backfield remains a significant strength for the Giants. Tiki Barber had an outstanding previous season, rushing for 1,860 yards and challenging Shaun Alexander for the lead. With Jim Finn providing solid blocking, the Giants boast one of the league's top backfields.
Receiving Corps
With Jeremy Shockey as the tight end, the receiving corps is reliably strong. Shockey's presence demands extra defensive attention. This year, they've added speedster Sinorice Moss, a second-round draft pick expected to add flair and stretch opposing defenses. The Giants' receiving lineup is above average. If Manning can pull all the pieces together, their offense has the potential to both score effectively and manage possession.
Defense & Special Teams
The Giants' defense was inconsistent last season and notably absent during the playoffs. To bolster this area, they signed LaVar Arrington from Washington, though they lost key nose tackle Kendrick Clancy, which could be detrimental against the run. Currently, the defense projects to be slightly above average, possibly missing the top 10 but not by much. The special teams unit remains strong and consistent.
2006 Prediction
The Giants will face tough competition in the NFC East, particularly from the Cowboys. The division is expected to be one of the most competitive in the NFL. The Giants are poised for another playoff appearance, with hopes that Eli Manning will shine this time. Despite a challenging schedule, they could finish the season with a 10-6 record.
