My Office - Behind the Plate
Summary
Out of all the positions I played, catching was my favorite.Article
Playing catcher was an unforgettable experience for me; I had the entire game in my view. It was my duty to position the fielders, judge whether long fly balls were fair or foul, and assess the pitcher's condition. If the pitcher seemed fatigued, I’d take a moment to visit the mound. As the on-field general, I was the direct link to the coach. Switching to catcher was the best decision of my playing career, providing endless fun and responsibility.
Behind the plate was my headquarters. Though playing other positions was enjoyable, catching allowed me to immerse myself in the action. I had the opportunity to shape the game and wield influence that was unmatched, except perhaps as a pitcher. The responsibility was exhilarating.
One strategic element I relished was analyzing a batter's stance and calling pitches to exploit their weaknesses. Striking out a batter was a collaborative effort between the pitcher and me. It was my responsibility to study the batter and share any valuable insights with the pitcher.
My reputation as a catcher rose when the pitcher excelled. Identifying the batter’s weaknesses and astutely calling the game was the essence of catching.
Studying the game was a trait shared by all great catchers. Legends like Johnny Bench, Roy Campanella, Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Thurman Munson, Elston Howard, and Ivan Rodriguez were my heroes. Bench, known for his incredible arm and power, and Campanella, similarly gifted, were particularly inspiring. As a loyal Yankees fan, I admired all their catchers, and Ivan Rodriguez was simply a remarkable talent.
